Silas's project

While my mom was visiting, each of our boys chose a project that they could work on with her after school. Silas, who is 10, is really into gardening and wanted an area of his own outside of the BIG garden. He decided on raised beds for his precious heirloom plants. :) Orange-glo watermelons and St. Valerie carrots are among some of his choices. He received these seeds as part of an exchange we participated in with our online homeschool group.

Drew tilled up the spots for them while they were building the boxes. They used old boards but I expect they will last for a couple of years and will suit his purposes perfectly!

How exciting! I bought the wood for our square foot gardening. I need to put it together soon.

I miss my garden boxes--in CA my husband built several nice ones for me. Here in East Texas, the termites would have a buffet with the wood.

Hi Yolanda. I would love to know how your garden turns out using that method. I hope you post pictures to your blog. :)

Well, Ann, my husband told me we have termites here also, so we'll see how long these boxes last. We used salvaged lumber so at least it won't be an expensive "buffet". :)

We, the boys and I, are about to start building strawberry boxes as soon as we get the garden planted. I'll keep you posted.

Hi Penny, I can't wait to see how everything turns out with your strawberries. We eat alot of those over here with our oatcakes. Is that your big garden there on the left. How exciting. By the way, I noticed we use alot of the same things for homeschooling, Math-U-See, Rod and Staff and Sonlight. ;0)

Hi Shereen. I will let you know how the strawberry project turns out. No, that is our little greenhouse on the left - beside Silas's raised beds. The strawberry beds are to the right of his beds. We still need to build the boxes. The big garden is BIG, like 75'X120'. I'll post pictures soon. :)

As for curriculum, we have tried several things, but we keep coming back to R&S and SonLight. Math-U-See was new for us this year and we love it. Alpha and Beta, soon to move on to Gamma.

So nice to see your garden!!! It looks really big in comparison with my two boxes :) I am glad your son is happy with the oranglo watermelons and carrots. I was in TN visiting my sister and did not have the opportunity to thank you for the seeds in exchange. Well, THANKS and God bless all your projects with your family.
