Tomatoes!

Levi and I were out in the greenhouse today doing some weeding. I knew we had a lot of blossoms but Levi spotted some little tomatoes! We were so excited. This plant is an heirloom variety called Principe Borghese. It produces nice small tomatoes that are good for drying.

I'd love to hear (and see) more about your greenhouse. How do you use it to expand your growing season? We had to replace all of the windows on our house when we bought it, and the old ones are in the shed gathering dust. My husband mentioned last week that he'd like to figure out how to use them to make a greenhouse. Time for me to learn about greenhouses!

Hi Ann. Well, this is our first year with a greenhouse. This past Fall I planted lettuce in the some of the beds so we were able to have extra greens. It didn't work out as well as I had hoped but I have learned a lot from it. The volunteer kale has done really well. We don't currently have a heat source in the greenhouse - besides the solar heat- so I need to remember to open and close the doors in the morning and evening when it starts getting chilly. Now, it is working great! The tomatoes in the greenhouse are HUGE compared to the ones in the garden. We are hoping to have tomatoes through December. I will plant lettuce again in the fall. We have some red sweet peppers in there also that are going great.

Your idea of using the windows is excellent. I have seen many plans using salvaged windows which are very nice. Check out your library...I know ours has some good books on building greenhouses. Ours is a simple metal frame with plastic stretched over it. The ends are both framed out and have doors. We are hoping to get a much larger one to put in the garden next year but even this small one will extend the season a lot.
